While many of us are still sweating out the end of summer, now is the time to start planning your capsule wardrobe for fall 2020.
This simple 29-piece casual fall capsule wardrobe is perfect for moms who want to look cute and feel comfortable.
With all the time you’ve spent at home this year, are you wearing a lot more comfortable clothes than ever before? (I know I am!)
This fantastic capsule wardrobe for fall 2020 is great because it won’t cause you to sacrifice an ounce of comfort.
What is a capsule wardrobe?
Before we go any further, if you’re wondering, “What is a capsule wardrobe?” – that’s okay!
A capsule wardrobe is a carefully curated selection of clothes that coordinate with each other and are worn together for one season.
Creating a capsule wardrobe is beneficial because it:
- saves time. The average woman spends 16 minutes a day deciding what to wear. With a capsule wardrobe, you don’t waste any time trying to match your clothes.
- saves money. With a capsule wardrobe, you only have to shop four times a year – and for very specific items. Instead of going to the store looking for “a few cute shirts,” you look for “a grey soft cardigan with buttons.”
- increases your confidence. Knowing that the clothes you are putting on have been selected to compliment your body shape or coloring helps you to feel more confident in your appearance. Choosing a color palette for your capsule wardrobe for fall
The best way to start curating your capsule wardrobe for fall is to decide on a color palette.
This is what ensures that your clothes will coordinate nicely with each other.
It is common to choose colors that reflect the season as well.
Some of the best fall colors are
- maroon or cranberry
- olive or hunter green
- mustard, ochre, or burnt sienna
- plum or eggplant
- navy or cadet blue
- browns of all shades
To keep your capsule wardrobe cohesive, it is best to choose between five and seven colors for the color palette. In almost all cases, fewer colors are easier to work with because you’ll be able to coordinate your capsule better.
Here’s the color palette I’ve chosen for this comfortable fall capsule wardrobe for moms:
The dark stone, navy blue, and light gray are the primary colors for the palette and will show up frequently throughout the capsule.
Maroon and dark olive are the complimentary colors to provide fun splashes of color and create focal points within the outfits.

Tops for Fall Capsule Wardrobe
This capsule wardrobe for fall features twelve different tops of varying sleeve length and fabric weight.
Temperatures and weather can change quickly and drastically during the fall, so it’s a great idea to have lots of variety and plenty of layering pieces!
Graphic tees
What’s a capsule wardrobe for moms without a few great graphic tees, right?
Maroon graphic tee
I think I might love this maroon graphic tee a little too much! Just throw it on at the end of the day when you’re tired and you’ll be all set!
Not only is it super cute, this super affordable tee is also very functional – it can be worn with jeans, joggers, skirts and more. It’s also a great layering piece as well.
Gray graphic tee
This fun gray graphic tee is a perfect mom gift – either for yourself or your mom bestie.
Because, really we are all worthy of a WOW from time to time, am I right?
Basic tees
A solid color well fitting tee is the basis of so many great outfits for moms. Here are some of the my favorites:
White notch v-neck tee
It is my belief that every capsule wardrobe – for any season – should have one good quality white tee.
Even though white isn’t actually on the fall color palette, this tee is such an essential layering piece that it needs a spot in the capsule wardrobe for fall.
I own this tee in blue and the fit is perfect for that casual-but-still-put-together look.
Navy v-neck tee
The v-neck silhouette is one of the most flattering necklines for nearly every body shape and size.
While the depth of the vee is your personal choice, I like this one because it’s not too revealing.
This particular v-neck tee is also available in lots of colors – including the maroon you see on this fall color palette!
Breton stripe tee
These nautical white and navy stripes on this long-sleeve tee are an incredibly classic look. The strong horizontal lines are perfect for anyone who wants to appear wider across the top (triangle, rectangle, and even hourglass shapes especially).
I’ve owned this tee for almost four years and it is still in great shape!
Comfortable tops and shirts
Let’s take a look at the rest of the tops and shirts for the fall capsule wardrobe for moms!
Chambray shirt
A classic chambray button-up shirt is a must-have for any fall capsule wardrobe.
This is one of my most versatile pieces. It can be worn tucked in or out with denim, skirts, and joggers, untucked and open over a tee with leggings, tied at the waist over a dress, and layered under cardigans and blazers.
And don’t be afraid to pair this with denim jeans – the all over denim look is highly flattering and fashionable. Add a leopard print belt or some flats with a pop of color and you’ll be stylin!
Maroon henley
This maroon henley is a step above the rest with these pretty gold buttons that help it to look especially perfect for fall!
The fabric is soft and so comfortable to pair with leggings, jeans, or a cute corduroy skirt.
Olive green tunic
This olive tunic from Banana Republic is bound to be a favorite for so many fall capsule wardrobes. The olive color here is great for warm skin tones, but because this has some cooler tones to it, many neutral and some slightly cool skintones will also be flattered by it.
Cardigans and hoodies
Fall is the perfect time of year to bring out those comfy cardigans and hoodies we love so much!
Button up cardigan
This button up cardigan is ideal for the fall weather because it isn’t too light or too bulky.
The wood buttons give it an earthy, fall type feel that will pair well with brown booties, denim, and all the typical shades of corduroy.
Sweater blazer
I’d love to meet the genius designer who had the idea to turn a blazer into a sweater!
This beautiful navy sweater is not only super comfortable, but has a classic style that only a blazer can bring.
Polka dot hoodie
This cute hoodie with its understated tonal polka dots is cute enough to wear out with friends!
If you are into the matching sets trend, there are also matching joggers to complete the set! Pair them with some cozy slippers and put some soup on for dinner for a perfect fall day at home!
Bottoms for Capsule Wardrobe for Fall 2020
With the colder weather coming on, this is a great time to say sayonara to the shorts and sandals of summer and say welcome back to your favorite denim and booties!
Denim
There is no doubt that finding the perfect pair of jeans is like searching for a needle in a haystack!
But I’m happy to tell you that it CAN be done.
These three pairs below will have you feeling happier with your wardrobe than you have in a long time.
Dark straight jeans
While I do love a good pair of skinny jeans, I’m so happy that other silhouettes are coming back in style again.
If you’re not yet ready to go for the full on boot cut, try these straight jeans from Paige Denim. They have the BEST back pockets for your backside, trust me.
Skinny jeans
Oh, skinny jeans. I honestly love ’em. They’re a closet staple and look so great with a top that is tucked in half way and a simple pair of great fall booties.
These high waisted ankle jeans are delightful, hold their shape, wash well and are worth every single penny.
The lighter wash is a fun trend right now and will look great with the darker colored tops of this capsule wardrobe for fall.
Charcoal skinny jeans
Fall is a great time to experiment with different denim washes.
I love this charcoal wash jean from Paige Denim. It’s a great flattering, dark grey shade that doesn’t have the seriousness of a completely black wash. (Plus black is just as hard as white to keep clean!)
Joggers and leggings
If you are all about dressing for comfort, you know already how wonderful joggers and leggings can be!
Utility joggers
These fun olive utility joggers are a great way to mix up your wardrobe.
The patch pockets and gathered ankle definitely give off a casual vibe.
And the light olive green color will pair well with any of the tops and shoes in this fall capsule wardrobe.
Navy joggers
These navy joggers are nothing but comfort!
And yet they still look refined enough to wear on errands or to after school pick up.
That is a major win for all moms everywhere in my book.
Black leggings
A high quality pair of solid black leggings is an essential piece for any cute and comfy fall capsule wardrobe!
Although black isn’t on the fall capsule wardrobe color palette, these leggings will pair well with almost every other piece in the capsule.
This pair has a nice high, thick waistband that is sure to help flatter your figure.
Dresses and skirts
While you may not think dresses and skirts belong on a comfortable casual capsule wardrobe list, give these two amazing pieces a look!
Cotton dress
This fun maroon cotton jersey dress is the best and easiest way to create a one-piece outfit for fall! If you haven’t tried wearing a dress at home, give it a go and see how your family reacts to mommy being so “dressed up!”
Pair it with booties, flats, or loafers and any of the cardigans or jackets to make yourself feel like a million bucks when you leave the house!
Also, this print is super fun – it’s not until you get up close that you realize that it’s horses running wild!
Corduroy skirt
This cute and fashionable skirt comes in one of the best fabrics for fall: corduroy!
The diagonal chevron lines will be super flattering to any figure, while the length is the perfect – not too long or too short.
You can pair this skirt with thicker tights when the temperatures drop, and it’ll look cute far into winter as well.
Outerwear for casual fall capsule wardrobe
I don’t know about you, but after a hot summer, I actually enjoy pulling out my jackets and coats again and feeling the crispness of the fall air.
Denim jacket
The denim jacket is one of the most classic pieces for any woman’s closet.
It pairs well with any outfit under the sun!
Be careful when selecting a denim jacket though. You want the bottom hem of the jacket to hit at your waistline – not your hip. Choosing a cropped length will be so much more flattering to your figure.
Utility jacket
Sometimes called a wax jacket, the utility jacket is great for those excursions when you’ll need extra storage space or want to look a bit more sporty and rugged.
If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain during the fall months, look for a utility jacket with a hood! Choose a color that will match well with your rain boots and you’ll be all set.
Trench coat
A trench coat is a fantastic piece for every woman’s closet and can be worn almost year round if needed.
Trench coats are available in many colors this year, but the classic khaki can’t be beat for timelessness and elegance.
If you have a wide or hourglass frame, look for a single breasted trench coat instead of the double breasted version I have here.
Shoes for the fall capsule wardrobe 2020
You may think that four pairs of shoes doesn’t seem like that much – and you’re right! That’s why I highly recommend going as high-quality as you can for footwear. Make it your goal to only buy shoes that will last for at least five years!
Booties
This pair of brown booties with a stacked heel just screams fall, doesn’t it?
I have an older pair of these and they are incredibly comfortable. If you’re in the market for a new pair this year, definitely give these beauties a try!
Accessories for the casual fall capsule wardrobe
I’ll have another best accessories for fall post coming soon, so for now here are the two most essential accessories for early fall 2020.Leopard print belt

Structured tote
